Tour Details

Why Peru?

Peru is a megadiverse country located in South America, a destination that houses Machu Picchu and a section of the Amazon rainforest, with diverse geography that includes a coastal, Andean, highland, Amazonian, and Antarctic region. It has 84 of the 117 life zones in the world, and its territory is divided into three natural regions. The coast occupies 11% of the national territory, the Sierra (Andean region) occupies 30%, and the Amazon rainforest occupies the remaining 59%. Peru is an Amazonian country. Ecotourism activities in Peru and the enjoyment of nature observation have become an increasingly popular activity in the local, national, and international market, such as birdwatching in natural environments protected by the state across the country. Imagine traveling to a country that has 1906 species of birds (The World Bird Database), a country where you could find more birds than in North America and Europe combined, a country that is the first home of endemic birds throughout South America, including over four hundred species that have subspecies.

Our Peruvian tour leader is a birding expert and an accredited naturalist who will ensure that your trip through this varied and beautiful landscape is full of birding and wildlife excellence.

LIMA VISIT - LOMAS DE ASIA AND PUERTO VIEJO

The place known as ‘Asia Hills’ is located in Cañete, one hundred kilometers from Lima by the south Panamericana highway. It is a fragile ecosystem with irregular features and interesting flora and fauna. That is why the best time of the year to visit is between June and October and it is one of the best options to go see coveted endemic birds of the Peruvian coast like, the Thick-billed Miner, the Coastal Miner, the Cactus Canastero and the Raimondi's Yellow-Finch.

Other species that we see frequently in this area are the Short-tailed field-Tyrant, the Collared Warbling-finch, the Vermilion Flycatcher, the Peruvian Meadowlark, the Purple-collared Woodstar, the Oasis Hummingbird, the Peruvian thick-Knee, etc.

On the way back we will visit Puerto Viejo, regionally known for its marshes and reeds that is home to the Grassland Yellow-Finch, the Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, the Gray-hooded Gull, the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, the Black-crowned Night-Heron, the Chilean Flamingo (nonbreeding visitor on coast), etc.

At sunset, we will return to our hotel.

DAY 02
DAY 03

LIMA VISIT- PUCUSANA FISHING PORT AND PANTANOS DE VILLA

The cold waters from the Humboldt stream that wash up on the Peruvian coasts are one of the best natural benefits which allow for ichthyological richness. It is a lure for many migrant and resident seabirds to Pucusana fishing port.

Pucusana is the place near Lima where you can see the Humboldt Penguin closer to the coast; on our visit we will be able to see the Humboldt Penguin, the Blue-footed Bobby, the Peruvian Booby, the Red-legged Cormorant, the Blackish-Oystercatcher, the Peruvian Pelican, the Ruddy Turnstone, the surf Cinclodes (endemic), the Inca Tern, etc.

On our way back to Lima, we will visit the Pantanos de Villa, which is a unique and protected swamp area within Lima. It that is located on the coast, that allows the nesting and traveling of migratory and resident birds, such as the Pied-billed Grebe, the Great Grebe, the White-tufted Grebe, the Cinnamon Teal, the White-cheeked Pintail, the Gray Gull, the Black-necked Stilt, the Stilt Sandpiper, the Least Sandpiper, the Semipalmated Plover, theSemipalmated Sandpiper, etc.

FLY LIMA–CUSCO

To complete this birding tour in Southern Peru, it will be necessary to take domestic flights.

We will travel to the city of Cusco that is famous for being the “cradle of the Inca civilization”. Experience incredible hotspots for bird watching, its culture, its gastronomy, and Machupicchu which is one of the modern wonders of the world.

Cusco has one of the highest airports in relation to the sea. Because the city is located at 3500 meters (11482.94 ft) above sea level, we will need to adapt to the altitude. After spending 24 hours in high altitude, the body increases the production of erythropoietin (EPO), which increases the number of red blood cells to transport more oxygen in the blood.

When we arrive at the hotel, we will have time for a walk around the beautiful Main Square

while we acclimate to the altitude and prepare for our upcoming trips in the area.

DAY 04
DAY 05
CUSCO-MACHUPICCHU

For many travelers, being able to go to Machupicchu is very important. So, we’ll have an opportunity to visit the famous Incan citadel of Machupicchu.

Our bird watching trip will start early. From our hotel, we will take a 1.5 hour-long car ride. From there, we will take a four-hour train ride to the town of Aguas Calientes. Afterwards, we’ll take a thirty-minute bus ride to the citadel of Machupicchu. Once we arrive, we’ll have an educational tour about this wonder of ancient architecture.

The Cloud Forest near Machupicchu is also a hotspot for birdwatching in Peru. The Incan Wren, an elusive and boisterous endemic bird who likes the bamboo forest, is one bird that closely identifies with the condition of the Cloud Forest. Spotting him and other native birds, such as — Masked Fruiteater, Masked Flowerpiercer, Rush-and-yellow Tanager, Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet, Rusty Flowerpiercer, Golden-olive Woodpecker, Ocellated Piculet, Bar-bellied Woodpecker, Pearled Treerunner — will be a fun challenge for all!

Inhabitants such as the Azara's Spinetail, Gray-breasted Wood- Wren, Chestnut-capped Brush-Finch, are inhabitants in the forest! With their shy behavior, they might be hard to see!

MACHUPICCHU-OLLANTAYTAMBO

The Cloud Forest is an excellent place to begin the day birdwatching. The town of Aguas Calientes is located at the bottom of the Machupicchu Mountain in the Cloud Forest.

You will often find that the beautiful surroundings are overrun by bird songs. On this day of bird touring, we will see the: Green Hermit, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Silvery Tanager, Fawn-breasted Tanager,

Saffron- crowned Tanager, Slate-throated Redstart, Bananaquit, Rust-and-yellow Tanager, Tropical Kingbird, Silver-beaked Tanager, Oleaginous Hemispingus, Russet-crowned Warbler, etc.

In the afternoon, we will return by train to Ollantaytambo town and arrive at our hotel.

IPAL ECOLODGE AND SURROUNDINGS

Our lodge is located in this part of the Cloud Forest and this area/hotel is new to the birdwatching scene. However, it has still managed to keep many high eBird records. The area has really surprised us with some bird sightings like the Buff-fronted Owl. The Peruvian Birds Book recognizes the Buff-fronted Owl range as irregular towards the northern part of Peru.  The Peruvian Bird Book also recognizes s other species that are in small ranges for the southern part of Peru, such as: Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, Russet-crowned crake, Stigain Owl; as in all rain forests, small birds in mixed flocks consisting of: Blue-and-yellow Tanager, Flame-faced Tanager, Streaked Xenops, Slaty-capped Flycatcher, Versicolored Barbet, Thick-billed Euphonia, Golden-collared Honeycreeper, Variable Antshrike , Streak-headed Antbird, Saffron-crowned Tanager, etc.
