Insurance

We strongly advise that your travel insurance policies include medical assistance and evacuation – we believe that it is ‘better to be safe than sorry!’ Should you decline to do so, we must state that we will in no way accept responsibility for expenses incurred should you require medical attention/evacuation while on holiday with us.

Accommodations

It is our policy to use the best available accommodation in each location. All hotels and lodges we use are government approved registered with the Tourism organism of Peru.

Clothing

This trip departs in Cusco which is generally a dry and cool time of the year but you may encounter light rain or damp condition. Evenings may be cool and you will certainly have many early mornings starts so will need some warm layers. The key to being comfortable is to adopt a system of several layers rather than one item of bulky warm clothing. Sun hats are an essential item, with a wide brim and something to protect your neck. Temperatures can drop very quickly in the evening and early morning and at altitude and you may again need to put on a number of layers.

Electricity

The standard voltage in Peru is 220-240 volts. Most American appliances (except hairdryers) now have built-in converters, so you only need to worry about bringing adapters. You will often find two pin sockets in bathrooms (type C). In most other rooms’ sockets are generally the round-three pin variety (type D). To be safe, take a universal travel adaptor, and if that still does not fit ask at hotel reception.

Equipment and Accessories

  • Small day pack
  • Sunglasses and retainers If you wear glasses,
  • Headlamp or flashlight Bring spare batteries
  • Anti-bacterial hand gel is very useful for washing hands when no water is available

Brief Itinerary

Itinerary

DAY 01
2-White-eared Puffbird
CUSCO- CHONTA -TAWN MOLLEPATA

To enjoy birdwatching and witness the majestic flight of the largest bird in South America, the Andean Condor, we invite you to join us on a trip close to the city of Cusco, Peru. The route takes us up a road that ascends to the village of Chonta, located in Limatambo district. From there, we hike for over an hour through the flank of the mountain to the viewpoint of Chonta, where we can observe the condors up close. This trip also offers sightings of other important high Andean birds that inhabit this area, including the Black-backed Grosbeak, Sierran Ealenia, Yellow-bellied Seedeater, Black and white Seedeater, Creamy-crested Spinetail (endemic), Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch (endemic), Black-tailed Trainbearer, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Variable Hawk, Rusty-fronted Canastero, Rufous-naped Ground-Tyrant, Black-billed Shrike-Tyrant, and more.

Later in the evening, at our lodge, we will have the opportunity to search for some of the most representative owls in the area, such as the Buff-fronted Owl, which is geographically distributed in other areas towards central and northern Peru according to the Peruvian birds’ book, and the Koepcke's Screech-Owl, named in memory of the German ornithologist Maria Koepcke. This bird was endemic and is currently found in Ecuador.

MOLLEPATA VALLEY-CUSCO

To start the day with enough expectations and the bird’s callings early in the morning, we are forced to go out to see them, and we will look for the most important birds in this valley such as: Apurimac Spinetail, Apurimac Brushfinch which take the name of a region very close to that area for having been studied in that area. Another bird that will add to our list is the Vilcabamba tapaculo, which is also important due to its endemic condition to Peru, and from these species we will be able to find many others, such as: White-bellied Hummingbird, Red-crested Cotinga, Sierran Elaenia, Barred Becard, Shining Sunbean, Pale -legged Warbler, Cinnamon Flyacatcher, Yellow-billed Tit-Tyrant, Mountain Velvetbreast, White-winged Black-Tyrant, etc.

This valley, at the bottom of the mountain, has a small dry forest and this place is inhabited by some species very restricted to this type of forest and here we will have the opportunity to find them; such as: White-eared Puffbird symbol bird of this village, Creamy-breasted Canastero, White-tipped Dove, and some species that share the different ecosystems that we can find here.

Late in the afternoon we will begin to return to Cusco to our hotel.
