Tour Details

Why Peru?

Peru is a megadiverse country located in South America, a destination that houses Machu Picchu and a section of the Amazon rainforest, with diverse geography that includes a coastal, Andean, highland, Amazonian, and Antarctic region. It has 84 of the 117 life zones in the world, and its territory is divided into three natural regions. The coast occupies 11% of the national territory, the Sierra (Andean region) occupies 30%, and the Amazon rainforest occupies the remaining 59%. Peru is an Amazonian country. Ecotourism activities in Peru and the enjoyment of nature observation have become an increasingly popular activity in the local, national, and international market, such as birdwatching in natural environments protected by the state across the country. Imagine traveling to a country that has 1879 species of birds (SACC checklist), a country where you could find more birds than in North America and Europe combined, a country that is the first home of endemic birds throughout South America, including over four hundred species that have subspecies.

Our Peruvian tour leader is a birding expert and an accredited naturalist who will ensure that your trip through this varied and beautiful landscape is full of birding and wildlife excellence

These ecosystems also share some Flowerpiercer these small birds that are looters of nectar from flowers such as; Black-throated Flowerpiercer, Masket Flowerpiercer, etc.

At sunset we will return to the town of Paucartambo to our hotel to spend the night.

PAUCARTAMBO - SAN COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE

Will have to leave early towards Manu National Park, we will start our day of full bird watching at Acjanaco Hight pass, which means that our records will be more dynamic since the altitudes from where we observe will be changing, this will guarantee us different species of birds, we will have Tanagers, Tyrans, Trogons, Mountain Tanagers, Toucanets, Fruiteaters, Cotingas, Hummingbirds, etc.

This day the altitudes will vary from 3500 meters/ 11482 ft above sea level. up to 1400 meters /4593 ft above sea level. It will be a sample of ecosystem changes with various species and our chances of recording species such as Golden-headed Quetzal, Masked Trogon, Gray-breasted Mountain -Toucan, Scarlet-bellied Mountain- Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, Barred Fruiteater, Long-tailed Syph, etc.

On the route we will spend the entire day, we will focus on the birds of this area and we will look for the endemic Inca Flycatcher and we will arrive at Cock of the Rock-Pedro area at dusk.

DAY 02
DAY 03
2-andean Cock of the Rock
COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE-BAMBOO LODGE

We are in the heart of the cloud forest, a famous place for its number of tanagers and hummingbirds that inhabit this area. Tanagers are often seen; Spotted Tanager, Silver-beaked Tanager, Golden-naped Tanager, Golden tanager, Orange-eared Tanager, Golden-collared Honeycreeper, accompanied by the colorful versicolored Barbet and some Tyrans such as: Bolivian Tyrannulet, Mottle cheeked Tyrannulet, Slaty-capped flycatcher, obviously there are also the shyer inhabitants of the undergrowth. such as the melodious-voiced Chestnut-breasted Wren, Grey-breasted Wood-wren, etc.

Our plan is to continue descending and this part of the route will give us more species of birds and we will arrive at our next place, which will be Bamboo Lodge, where we will spend the night and enjoy our dinner.

BAMBOO LODGE-PARAISO LODGE

Bamboo Lodge is located at the beginning of the most important ecotone in the Manu National Park, birds such as Harpy Eagle as well as Andean Cock of the Rock have been recorded many times, you can also see a Variable Antshrike and a Silvered Antbird, species that inhabiting altitudinal extremes or they are living together at their altitudinal extremes.

This overlapping is already beginning to show us different weather and new birds for our lists and is where we will start today recording Tanagers such as: Green-and-gold Tanager, Blue-necked Tanager, Green Honeycreeper, Masked Tanager the resident Leaf gleaner such as: Ruddy Foliage, Dusky-cheeked Foliage-Gleaner, Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher, Yellow Tyrannulet, Olivaceous Flatbill, etc.

The list is large and our chance of seeing diverse species such as: Flycatchers, Manakin, Orioles, Seedeaters, and Raptors is high.

Over the course of the day, we will move between birding spots and get closer to our next Paraíso Lodge.

DAY 04
DAY 05
PARAISO LODGE- INKA AMAZONIA-PARAISO LODGE

This area is at an altitude of seven hundred meters above sea level, and the diversity is high, our first activity will be to visit Inka-Amazonia, is a Hummingbird sanctuary where many iridescent species can be recorded such as: Rufous-crested Coquette, White-necked Jacobin, Gould's Jewelfront, Violet-headed Hummigbird, Buff-tailed Sicklebill, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Koepcke's Hermit, Great-billed Hermit, Fork-tailed Woodnyph, etc.

Since Inka-Amazonia is located in an ecotone, its diversity becomes more varied, tanagers and honeycreepers also visit, these feeders can be seen the Lemon-throated Barbet, Masked Tanager, Green Honeycreeper, Turquoise Tanager, Yellow-bellied Dacnis, Black-face Dacnis, etc.

PARAISO LODGE-MACHUWASI SWANP-FELIPE TRAILS

Macchuwasi is a small swamp surrounded by secondary forest, where some very restricted species have been recorded such as:  Black-and-white Tanager, Red-hooded Tanager, Blackish Rail, Pale-eyed -Blackbird, Black-bellied Seedfinch, Solitary black Casique, obviously there are residents of these types of habitats too such as:  Hoatzin, Black-capped Donacobios, Horned Screemer, Crimson-masked Tanager, etc.

Its paths and small water spaces often offer us the wonderful Sumbittern and the Sungrebe, which are residents in these types of habitat in the Amazon jungle, there are also the antbirds that are shyer and They move close to the ground such as:  White-browed Antbird, White-lined Antbird, Yellow-breasted Warbling-antbird, Plain-winged Antshrike, etc.

Another of our options is to go to Buena Vista (Felipe) which is located on the other side of the Madre de Dios River. This place is located at the base of the primary forest of the Manu National Park that could offer us some species that are residents in primary forests such as: Dwarf-tyrant Manakin, Ocher-bellied Flyacatcher, Spotte-backed Antbird, Round-tailed Manakin, Band-tailed Manakin, Bluish -slate Antshrike, etc.

DAY 06
3- Dwarf Tyrant-Manakin
DAY 07

PICO DE HOZ – CUSCO

It has been six days of full birding on the Manu Road, today it is time to return to Cusco and prior to our departure we will visit the feeders of Pico de Hoz, a place of concentration of hummingbirds where we can record some frequent species for our trip report such as: Long-billed Starthroat , Tinamous, the list is long and we will be able to add some species before leaving the famous Manu Road and arriving to Cusco with some strategic stops along the way to look for some species that we have yet to register.

CUSCO-SORAYPAMPA-OLLANTAYTAMBO

Soraypampa is a dry forests habitat and montane-Andean foothill’s at upper part. This variation makes possible ecological niches capable of housing endemic species and birds restricted to small spaces that in turn show the fragility of an ecosystem to human action.

The route to Soraypamapa will give us the possibility of being able to register species such as: Creamy-breasted Canastero, in its subspecies Pale tailed Canastero, White-eared Puffbird, perhaps these are the most important of this type of habitat, in this part of the valley we will obviously record many more species such as: Mountain Cacique, unusual in this dry habitat because it is more of a cloud forest, Black-backed Grossbeak, Golden-billed Saltator, etc.

As we ascend towards the upper part of the valley the climate changes and as we advance, we will begin to record species such as: Rust-and-yellow Tanager, Creamy-crested Spinetail, White-winged Black-Tyrant, Apurímac Spinetail, Apurímac Brushfinch and many species that inhabit this forest. At sunset we will return in the direction to Cusco but halfway there we will detour towards Ollantaytambo where we will spend the night.

DAY 08
DAY 09
5 -cinclodes aricomae
OLLANTAYTAMBO-ABRA MALAGA (HIGHLAND)-IPAL

The Málaga pass is an exceptional area for bird watching, its variation in altitudes ranging from two thousand meters to four thousand two hundred meters above sea level is the habitat of many species restricted to extreme survival altitudes, it is not easy to access because the altitude makes  thin the air, a walk of approximately three hours to Polylepis relict where is home to the Royal Cinclodes, Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant, White-browed Tit- Spinetail, Tawny Tit-Tyrant, Giant Connebill, Red-rumped Bush-tyrant, Puna Tapaculo and also we can look for the Glacier Finch which is in a vulnerable situation due to the loss of its habitat since it even nests in glaciers and has been ascending in search of ice masses to nest.

If we have recorded these species, we will have made our pilgrimage successful and we will leave this valley again and continue looking for some more endemic species, such as Junín Canastero, Rusty-fronted Canastero, White- tuffted Sumbean, etc.

Then, we will continue and pass towards to flank of the cloud forest where endemics such as Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant, Parodi's Hemispingus, Cuzco Brushfinch and many other colorful species of the cloud forests. They usually form mixed flocks to search food and strategy protection.

At afternon we will get to rest at Ipal Ecolodge.

IPAL ECOLODGE-HABRA MALAGA (CLOUD FOREST)-CUSCO

Today we will leave from Ipal Ecolodge and we will continue recording species, it will be our last day of birding in Peru, we will look for species that we consider necessary on the Ipal Ecolodge trails, or we will go out to look for the endemic species that we are missing on the Abra de Abra cloud forest route. Malaga, in any case, will be very interesting today to look for species on the route and around the hostel.

We will return to the city of Cusco where we will finish our trip through the most attractive bird routes in the Cusco region, it will be the tour where the numbers in our trip reports make this great birding trip in the south of Cusco worth it. Peru.

It will have been a trip of many species, many learnings and a lot of cultural exchange, we will say goodbye in Cusco with great memories of intense days of bird watching that we have experienced.

End of our services.
